Robin Roberts, a 'Whiz Kid' pitcher
and Hall of Famer, dies at age 83
Hall of Fame pitcher Robin Roberts, who spent 19 years in the big leagues, mostly with the Phillies, died on May 6, 2010, from natural causes in his Temple Terrace, Fla., home. He was 83. Roberts broke in with Philadelphia in 1948, at the age of 21, and proceeded to be named to seven consecutive All-Star teams. Roberts won 20 games for the first time in 1950 as part of the Phillies' pennant-winning team commonly known as the "Whiz Kids" due to its collection of young stars. He won 138 games from 1950-55 and finished with a career record of 286-245. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1976.
